Page girls win with only three players on court

Short on depth and experience but long on effort and optimism, the Page Middle School girls’ basketball team got its first victory with a Cinderella win on Saturday. 

First-year Page coach Amy O’Neil was a little daunted when only nine girls came out for her team. Of the nine, only two had played before, and that was two or three years earlier in recreation leagues. 

O’Neil took on the challenge and went to work teaching the girls the basics. “They’ve worked really hard and they have good attitudes. They never got down and always looked to the next game,” she said. 

On Friday, the Page Eagles added another loss to their winless record with a 25-12 bow to Yorktown in their tournament opener in the annual Colonial Capital Kiwanis Showdown at Berkeley Middle School, Williamsburg. Nine middle schools teams competed in the tourney, which was won by the hosts.
