Paddleboarder to journey length of Chesapeake Bay

Annapolis native Chris Hopkinson will attempt a 240-mile journey from Havre de Grace, Maryland, to Virginia Beach atop a 14-foot paddleboard over the course of nine days. The Bay Paddle, presented by Flying Dog Brewery, will take place Sept. 18-26 to raise awareness and funds for the Oyster Recovery Partnership to plant oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.
Hopkinson has set a fundraising goal of $200,000 for his journey, which will launch from Concord Point Lighthouse in Havre de Grace on Sept. 18. From there, Hopkinson will follow a route that mirrors that of Captain John Smith when he set out to explore the Chesapeake Bay in 1608.
According to his anticipated timeline, Hopkinson will be entering local waters on Sept. 23-24. On Sept. 23, he is expected to end his day at Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve in Kilmarnock. The following day, he’ll make the roughly 30-mile trip to the New Point Comfort Lighthouse in Mathews.
More information about his trip can be found at www.baypaddle.org.
