Chesapeake historian and author Kate Livie will present “Oysters Wars of the Chesapeake Bay” at Historic Christ Church and Museum on Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning at 4 p.m. The event at the venue in Weems features fresh oysters, handcrafted cocktails, a light supper and a book signing with Livie.

According to Livie, for 50 years following the Civil War oystermen and packing houses profited off the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay in a great oyster gold rush that created cities, sparked conflict, and transformed the region’s economy and culture. From shanghaied immigrant deckhands “paid off by the boom” to skipjack-and-Fishery Force gun battles on the Chester River, Livie will explore this fascinating history of the bay’s wildest era.
