Oyster reef project

Work is underway in a project to create a reef of about 53 acres, approximately 12”-18” in height, on public Baylor Grounds near the mouth of the Piankatank River in Middlesex and Mathews counties. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Norfolk District, in partnership with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, has issued a contract for this project, Chesapeake Bay Oyster Recovery Program, Piankatank River Reef Habitat Phase II. The project involves transporting and placing Class A-1 riprap via barge to the project site. Reef substrate is being placed by mechanical clamshell from a barge and recorded by a “ClamVision” dredge positioning system to ensure proper placement and height. The dredge boat is shown just south of Stove Point in Deltaville.
