Oyster garden

The Tidewater Oyster Gardeners’ Association (TOGA) will be at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, providing information to help people raise their own oysters. Master Oyster Gardeners will be available to talk about and demonstrate various oyster cages, equipment, selecting a site, obtaining a permit, water quality, maintenance, health and safety, ecology, and harvesting. A vendor will be on hand selling spat. At 10 and 11:30 a.m., free 30-minute lectures will cover basic information about oyster gardening followed by a question-and-answer period. Those planning on attending are encouraged to bring a folding chair to guarantee a seat. Equipment will not be sold at this event; however, TOGA will hold its fall float sale on Oct. 15. You can select and order equipment for the fall sale on the TOGA website, www.oystergardener.org/fall-float-sale.
