Outstanding youth

Elizabeth Ransone is having a good time. Since Jan. 9, the 14-year-old Mathews High School freshman has been serving as a legislative page for the Virginia General Assembly, and she says she enjoys it a lot.

Ransone’s job isn’t exactly glamorous, but it’s important. Wearing the page’s signature navy blazer and white blouse, she spends half her day on the floor of the House of Delegates when it’s in session, helping the delegates with whatever jobs they give her. While there, she’s able to listen to the arguments legislators make as they discuss proposed bills.

"It’s sometimes interesting to hear the opinions on both sides," she said during a telephone interview Tuesday. "Each makes some very good points, so you have to form your own opinion."
