Osprey’s return

Like the blooming daffodils, the return of ospreys is a sign of the approach of spring. Photographer Susan Nottingham awoke Monday morning to see this osprey perched on the platform on the Piankatank River in Dutton. This is the third consecutive year that ospreys have returned to this particular nest (erected in 2018) during the first week of March—without benefit of a calendar, map or GPS. As is typical, its mate will arrive shortly and they’ll begin renovating and defending their nest ahead of mating season.
