Originals

Two out of three fire companies in our counties are planning to build new main stations. From top down are the originals of all three volunteer companies, Abingdon, Gloucester and its first addition, and Mathews. The departments have augmented their facilities with additions and more stations, and in Gloucester County, the fire companies absorbed rescue squads which formed later. The Abingdon photo dates from 1958 and shows firefighters Carlyle Brown, I.R. Blake Jr., C.M. “Buck” Rowe, Marion Davis and Joe Brown with a new tank truck outside the station at Bena. In Gloucester, where funding is being sought for a new station, this photo from August 1962 shows the original 1950 station with additional bays constructed that year. Further additions were made in 1992. The Mathews Station One shown in the 1950s was expanded into a two-bay brick station in 1957, and replaced with the present building in 1975.
