Opening day goes off without a hitch

Tuesday was back to school for students in Gloucester and Mathews, and the day went off without a hitch, according to officials in the two counties.

“Everything went fine” in Gloucester, said the division’s assistant superintendent John Hutchinson. “Everybody said it was one of the smoothest openings we’ve had. It was a great start, in my opinion.”

“Very smooth” is how Mathews County’s Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch described Tuesday’s opening day. The morning bus routes went off without a problem and by 8:15 a.m., the hallways at all three schools were empty and the kids hard at work in the classroom. “Everyone’s buckled down and getting busy,” she said Wednesday morning.
