Once-vibrant Mathews Chamber no longer active

For many years, the Mathews Chamber of Commerce was a vibrant organization in a small county. But that’s not been the case in recent years, as the chamber currently is not an active entity.

“I would like to see them get back in the fold,” long-term chamber secretary Faye Hutchinson said of the businesses who once made the chamber a strong group.

Haskins Ramos, the organization’s last president, said the group hasn’t been active for about five years. Ramos said other organizations have stepped up to fill some of the functions the chamber used to provide, including a business development group, the Mathews Visitor and Information Center and several nonprofit groups.

Ramos and Brenda Moore, a longtime chamber board member, said there’s still a need for a chamber of commerce in Mathews.
