Olympic swimmer visits childhood friend

A Gloucester couple had a two-time Olympian visit their home last week.

George and Rose Nygaard entertained Nicola Muscat, a 22-year-old Maltese swimmer, who competed in the women’s 50-meter freestyle at both the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and most recently at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Muscat flew straight from Rio after the Olympic Games to visit her childhood friend, Aprille Zammit, who is the Nygaards’ granddaughter. This is also Muscat’s first visit to the United States.

Zammit, who was also born and raised on the island of Malta, said she and Muscat grew up swimming together. “We stayed in touch over the years and have always remained close friends,” Zammit said.

After arriving in the U.S., Zammit showed Muscat some must-see sites on the East Coast such as New York City, Washington, D.C., Richmond and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where Zammit has been staying this summer.
