A Mathews man died in a single-vehicle accident on Ridge Road last Thursday.

Virginia State Police said that a 2000 Dodge Dakota driven by Juergen Jacob Metzger, 80, of North was traveling southbound on Ridge Road when it ran off the road and struck a tree just before 12:30 p.m.

Metzger was killed upon impact, according to the VSP. Metzger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident and alcohol was not a contributing factor.

This was the second fatality on Mathews County roads in 2021.
