NORMA JEAN SURWILA

1934–2015

Norma J. Surwila of Norfolk, passed away peacefully Monday morning, June 22, 2015, at Sentara Lee Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. She was 81.

Norma Jean was a native of Mathews, Va., and had made her home in Norfolk since 1950. She was the daughter of the late Virgie L. Hudgins and Calvin E. Brewington; the widow of Joseph Surwila, and mother to the late Mark B. Surwila.

Norma is survived by a son, Joseph S. Surwila; daughters, Jeanne M. Surwila and Victoria L. Herman; a sister, Janice Miller, and brother, John C. Brewington, both of Mathews, as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. 

Norma was a member Fairmont Park United Methodist Church for 65 years and was a devoted Christian. Norma was known for her love of fine things, big beautiful hats, baking, Southern cooking, canning, love of Christian hymns, and her fun-loving spirit. She was a devoted wife and mother with a kind and generous heart and she will be greatly missed.

A memorial service was held at Fairmont Park United Methodist Church on June 27. Burial will be held at Milford Haven Cemetery at a later date.
