A 92-year-old Norfolk man died on July 4 after going for an evening swim in a creek off Horn Harbor in the Port Haywood area of Mathews.
According to Mathews Sheriff April Edwards, Dante Calcagni had been in the water for about five minutes when family members found him floating face down near the dock. They started CPR and called 911.
Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad arrived and took over, she said, and two Mathews County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and assisted.
Edwards said that the incident is still being investigated, and that the matter is in the hands of the state medical examiner’s office....
