The Mathews County Board of Supervisors on Thursday reviewed and sent to public hearing its proposed budget for the next fiscal year. Board members were handed copies of the draft document at the beginning of the 1 p.m. meeting and adjourned one hour and 15 minutes later, having decided to advertise a public hearing for a $24.28 million total budget with no tax increases. The vote was four to one, with supervisor Amy Dubois dissenting. The school system has asked for an additional $977,100 in funding this year, but the proposed budget includes just an additional $225,000, plus enough money for a new school bus expected to cost $96,000. Mathews County Administrator Mindy Conner said that, with the state possibly increasing local school funding by $371,653, there will be a $605,535 gap in the school system’s budget.
