About Martines
Martines was an acclaimed as an exceptional and historically significant musician, said a press release, but her fame was limited largely to Vienna, Austria, spreading across Europe over time.
Martines was a composer, music teacher and trainer, singer, keyboardist, events manager and concert organizer. A child prodigy and piano student of composer Joseph Haydn, she was the first female member of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, said the release. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart frequently attended weekly musical events at her home, performing four-hand piano sonatas with her. When she opened a singing school in her home, Mozart and Haydn often performed along with her.
Her “Symphony in C” is believed to be the first symphony composed by a woman, said the release.
“Audiences for Marianna Martines’ music may feel they have had to wait too long to discover her,” said Repper in the release. “But having done so, they’re likely to remember her fondly for years to come.”
