The body of a 65-year-old Newport News woman was recovered from the York River Tuesday after she jumped off the Coleman Bridge.
The Gloucester County 911 communications center received a report at about 10 a.m. that a person had jumped off the bridge, according to Lt. Scott Little of the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office. He said the woman, whose name was not released, left her vehicle on the southbound Gloucester side of the bridge.
Little said the U.S. Coast Guard recovered the woman’s body from the river and the case was being investigated as a suicide. Units from the York County Sheriff’s Office, Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, York County Fire and Life Safety, and the GSO responded to the area along with the Coast Guard.
