New sign, same loving school

Representatives of the Mathews Branch NAACP presented Mathews Elementary School principal Cynthia Gray with a check for $1,314.36 on June 13, completing its pledge to pay for all costs related to changing the name of the school to Mathews Elementary School. The most recent payment reimburses Mathews County Public Schools for the final cost of the new sign that was recently put in place in front of the school, according to a release from the Mathews NAACP. When the Mathews County School Board voted to change the name of the school in 2020, the NAACP pledged to cover all the costs associated with the name change. Taking part in the presentation were, from left, Raymond Willis Sr., Gray, Peggy Newsome and chapter president Edith Turner.
