New proposal could bring broadband to Middle Peninsula

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors received an overview of a new proposal to bring broadband to the Middle Peninsula through an agreement with the Pamunkey Tribe, whose reservation is near the town of West Point.

During Tuesday’s meeting, which was held in the historic courthouse, County Administrator Mindy Conner said that the plan offers a new opportunity because resources will be available through the now federally-recognized tribe that hadn’t been available in the past.

A study on the subject conducted by the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission includes a vision statement for the tribe’s business enterprise, PamunkeyNet. It states that the tribe will build and operate “a modern, high-performance wireless and fiber broadband infrastructure” that provides businesses and residents with “a choice of competitive service providers and internet-based services” at affordable prices.
