New owners operating Mathews grocery

Best Value Supermarket in Mathews now has new owners.

Sterling Hudgins and his wife, Kathryn Tatterson of Port Haywood, bought the grocery Aug. 1 from Steve Wiseman of Cobbs Creek, who now works for the store as a manager.

Tatterson said they have made some renovations to the building, which Hudgins has owned for three years. In addition, they have added some inventory and plan to make other changes in the months ahead.

Already they have expanded the selection of wines stocked, added a new line of funny greeting cards, and expanded items such as feed for the birds.

Tatterson said they have kept all the favorite items, including the fried chicken and the deli with its popular subs. Another big seller is fresh ground beef. The shelves are full of produce, dairy, frozen foods, canned goods and more. Tatterson said they are listening to suggestions from customers and have cut many prices in their 14,000-square-foot store to stay competitive with larger chain stores.
