New mobile marine maintenance service offered

A new mobile marine maintenance and repair business is now available to serve customers in Mathews, Gloucester and Middlesex counties.

Mathews resident Howard Hudgins of Howard’s Marine Service said he provides everything from simple maintenance on boats to repairs and “everything in between.”

Formally trained in Marietta, Ga., and Orlando, Fla., on Johnson, Evinrude and Honda outboards, Hudgins said he will repair all brands, makes and models of engines, including stern drive, inboard and outboard. He said he can do on-board repairs or can pull a boat out of the water onto one of his trailers if necessary.

“I can come to them no matter what the size of the boat,” said Hudgins.

He will also install electronic systems such as GPS units and depth finders and install and repair electrical and plumbing systems.

Hudgins said his grandfather, Ed Jordan, was an outboard mechanic, so he has been around boats his whole life. He first began working on his own engines, then those of friends and family members before he got his first formal job with a boat dealership at Chimney Corner.

Hudgins continued with that business when it was purchased by Pulley’s Marine and has also worked at Morningstar Marinas. He most recently leased and operated the yard at Mobjack Marina for five years before deciding to go mobile.
