GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys finished its 2023 “Texts=Wrecks” campaign by awarding New Kent High School graduate Madison Green a $1,000 college scholarship for winning its statewide essay contest, defeating 200 other applicants.
Green, the daughter of Kasey and James Green, will attend Old Dominion University this fall to study civil engineering.
In her winning essay, Green explains how she and a classmate created a YouTube video highlighting the dangers of texting while driving for a high school media class. The video, called “When will you be home?” was so effective that it won first place at the Virginia High School League 2022 Film Festival.
“I try to remind myself and the others around me of the importance of putting the phone down and operating a vehicle sober and safely,” Green wrote. “Making the video educating others and spreading knowledge of the things we should be grateful for makes me feel like I am doing something to change the people around me.”
