New FCS class teaches useful skills, including cooking

Teacher Michelle Williams opened her classroom doors in September to the newest subject at Thomas Hunter Middle School, Family and Consumer Science. (In days past it was called Home Economics.) The class has become an outstanding success.

The class is an elective for the seventh and eighth grade students, and the sixth grade students are scheduled in. All classes are full with a waiting list for next year.

FCS classes got underway with a tight budget. Michelle, students and other volunteers worked during the summer repainting, moving furniture and obtaining the proper equipment. Michelle quickly made a wish list on Amazon and the word got around. “I am amazed and grateful at the response we received from the community.” Donations continue and a wish list is still posted on Amazon. “Ninety-six percent of what we are now working with came from the community.”
