New extension agent comes to Mathews

Rachael Winston of Gloucester has been appointed to the position of associate extension agent for Mathews County. She began her duties on Sept. 25.

Winston said her focus will be on 4-H programming. In addition to continuing ongoing programs, she said she would like to start a shooting sports club in Mathews this spring that will include instruction in archery and the use of rifles and shotguns. She said she started such a club at a previous position in King William County and it had been very popular. She said such a club teaches responsibility, safety, and confidence—all life skills that 4-H tries to instill. She said there would be regular meetings once or twice a month.

Other upcoming programs will include a Nature Camp, an Animal Science Camp, a Day Camp during the school system’s spring break, and a Summer Day Camp for the 5-8 year-old Cloverbuds.
