New Emergency Management Coordinator hired in Gloucester

Gloucester resident Brett Major was recently hired as Gloucester County’s new Emergency Management Coordinator. Currently employed by the U.S. Coast Guard as Assistant Chief of Response for USCG Sector Hampton Roads, he will begin work with the county Friday on a part-time basis. He is expected to come on board ful-time Nov. 1.

According to Gloucester County spokesperson Christi Lewis, Major has extensive experience in supervising personnel, operational and contingency planning, mission execution and interagency coordination through unified efforts of federal, state and local agencies. In his current job, Lewis said Major oversees six Coast Guard stations, managing marine environmental protection for the world’s largest naval port, and overseeing hazard response throughout Virginia’s maritime domain.

Lewis said Major has extensive experience working with emergency operations centers for hurricanes, including Katrina and Rita, as well as numerous Florida hurricanes. ...
