New DMV location to open to public May 21

Gloucester’s DMV Customer Service Center will be moving to its new location in the York River Crossing Shopping Center, Hayes, on Monday, May 21.

The current Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office at 6577 George Washington Memorial Highway, south of Short Lane, will close for business at 5 p.m. next Wednesday, May 16. A DMV 2 Go mobile office will be parked in front of the new office to serve customers from Thursday, May 17 to Saturday, May 19, said DMV spokesman Melanie Stokes.

Customers can also conduct transactions through www.dmvNOW.com, DMV’s automated telephone service at 1-888-337-4782 or the mail.

The new Hayes center has more than 3,900 square feet, Stokes said, which will afford much more space than the present 2,500-square-foot facility. Stokes said the new building will provide customers better parking, safer road test routes, and additional amenities such as public restrooms.

The center will include six customer service windows, Stokes said, as well as three testing stations.

"With its convenient location and added amenities, York River Crossing Shopping Center is the ideal location for a customer service center," said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. "It will allow us to serve customers more efficiently, minimize customer wait times and provide the newest technologies available for our customer service operation."

DMV plans a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new center at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, to celebrate the office’s grand opening. A number of legislators and local dignitaries are scheduled to attend, Stokes said.

DMV has 74 offices across Virginia, Stokes said, as well as a fleet of five DMV 2 Go mobile customer service centers.
