A new business will kick off at Sunday’s Homestead Market at the old Page Middle School grounds in Gloucester off Route 17.

Tammy Petrowicz started Grammy’s Garden as a creative outlet to share her love of herbalism and gardening with others. “I really do believe that our plants and mother earth can give us a lot of things for our bodies, so I really want to be able to share that with others and share my love of gardening as well as herbalism and how plants can help us,” she said.

Petrowicz left her job after her mother was diagnosed with stage four cancer and her son needed child care; everything fell into place all at once, she said. Starting Grammy’s Garden was a way to supplement her income and get to be creative using the plants she loves to grow, while also being there for her loved ones.

From Grammy’s Garden, you can buy soaps, bath salts, lotions, salves, fire starters, loofahs, gourds and flavored salts and vinegars. “It’s been a lot of fun being really creative in how I can use the plants I’ve grown,” she said.

“On one of my soaps I used carrot juice, from the carrots I grew, and paprika as a coloring.” Thinking about the way different plants can benefit the skin and finding natural ways to dye the soap has been one of the things Petrowicz has enjoyed most. She plans to only use natural color in her products, deciding to not make a product if she can’t find a way to dye it naturally.

Like her mother, Petrowicz loves all things creative, from gardening to landscaping to cooking, being creative is an outlet for her stress. “I definitely got that from my momma,” she said.

“I’m only selling things I can do via the cottage laws for right now. I don’t have the right kind of kitchen to be able to do all of the other kinds of things I’d like to do,” she explained. For now, she plans to sell through farmers’ markets and face-to-face, showcasing her products on her Facebook, Grammy’s Garden LLC, and her Instagram, grammys_garden_llc.
