The Nook, a bright, colorful new bookstore and gift shop on Gloucester Main Street, is having its grand opening tonight from 5-7 o’clock.
Shoppers are invited to stop by, browse the books and gift items, and enjoy one of the cozy reading spots. Books for all ages are available, from children and young adults to adults. There’s even a tween section for middle schoolers.
“There’s a little bit of everything,” said owner Danielle Hilton.
Children’s activities such as sing-alongs and arts and crafts sessions will soon be offered at the shop, said Hilton, along with book clubs for older children and adults. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Hilton said she previously worked as a special education paraprofessional at a Gloucester elementary school and became friends with the school’s librarian, helping out whenever needed, including with the scholastic book fair.
“I fell in love with the calmness of working in the library,” she said. “I enjoyed it so much, I said, why not do it as a business?”
A Newport News native, Hilton moved to Boca Raton, Florida, as a teenager, where she met her husband, Aaron, who is partnering with her in the business. But she missed Virginia, so the couple and their children, ages 17, 14, 11, and 9, moved to Gloucester six years ago, where Aaron Hilton established his own plumbing business, Hilton Home Services LLC. Both businesses are located at 6616 Main Street.
