NELLIE SUE SHIFFLETT

Nellie Sue Shifflett, 72, of Gloucester, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

She was born in Rogersville, Tennessee, to parents John and Ruby Greer, in a loving family, who had a total of eight children. Nellie devoted her life to being a nurse with providing loving care to patients at Springfield State Hospital, Eastern State Hospital and Walter Reed Convalescent Center.

Nellie always welcomed everyone who came to her door and never let anyone leave hungry. She always saw the positive in everyone who crossed her path. She was kind and generous beyond compare. She had faith in the Lord that carried her through many troubled times. She was a survivor of breast cancer and a cardiac bypass. She showed strength and courage as she battled Myelodysplastic syndrome. She was an angel to all but God called her home.

She is survived by her husband, Ruben (Billy) E. Shifflett, whom she was married to for almost 52 years. She is also survived by her children, Dawn and Mark McCoy of  Martinsburg, West Virginia; Robert and Rebecca Shifflett of Salem, West Virginia; Billy and Diana Shifflett of Gloucester, and Tina and Timothy Welsh of Gloucester; grandchildren, Robert and Latisha Shifflett, Billy Shifflett, Joshua Shifflett, Timothy and Jenna Welsh, Samantha Welsh, Tyler McCoy, Dalton McCoy, Harley Shifflett, and Savannah Welsh; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Lily, Brentley, and one great-grandson due in July; brother, Robert Greer, and sister, Mary Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby; brothers, Charles and James; sisters, Janet, Deal and Shirley.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. The family will receive family and friends Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, from 6-7:30 p.m. Burial will be at Bellamy Cemetery.
