Nellie Sue Hull Powell of Hayes, passed away peacefully on Dec. 20, 2018, with her family by her side.

Nellie was born in Warrenton, North Carolina, on Dec. 11, 1926. She worked at Abingdon Elementary School as a teacher’s aide for a number of years, and retired from Gloucester County Treasurer’s office in 2000 as a Deputy Treasurer.

She was predeceased by her parents, Lucy Pearl Frazier Hull and Gordon B. Hull Sr.; the love of her life, her husband, Cecil L. Powell; son, Earl Powell; brothers, Gordon B. “G.B.” Hull Jr. and Alfred H. “Bo” Hull, and sister, Alma H. Allen.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda P. Lacks and husband Carlton; son, Ronald H. Powell and wife Renee, and a daughter, Susan P. Sales and husband Stephen Sales III. She was a wonderful and loving grandmother to five grandchildren, Shawn (Kate), Stephen IV (Amy), Christopher (fiancée, Kacie and her children, Dominik and Kyndall), Ashley (Corey) and Jessica. She has one great-granddaughter, River, and another great-grandchild on the way.

A celebration of her life will be held at noon, Dec. 27, 2018, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Bena. The Rev. Carol Bookwalter will conduct. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 11 a.m.-noon, at the church. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.

The family desires memorial contributions be given to Bethlehem U.M. Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 185, Bena, Va. 23018.
