Nearly 19 tons of trash collected in Gloucester

Nearly 19 tons of trash was collected during the seventh annual Clean Gloucester Day, which was held on March 18 along the county’s roads.

A total of 856 bags of litter and a total of 18.94 tons of debris was collected, Clean Community Coordinator René Moring said Monday. The cleanup drew 670 people, surpassing the goal of 650 participants, Moring said.

Last year, 587 volunteers participated in Clean Gloucester Day, which Moring said is a way to spruce up the county before the many visitors arrive for the Daffodil Festival, which was held last Saturday and Sunday. The 2016 cleanup tallied 8.26 tons of litter, Moring said.

 This year the amount of litter was so much more because of two major donations: All Season Lawn & Tree brought two trucks including one with a boom for collecting litter in Guinea and Coke resident Joy Mahler and grandson Devin McGrew used a truck and trailer to collect many bags of litter volunteers had picked up in Hayes.
