The Mathews High School softball players and coaches were recognized on the field at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., before the start of Monday night’s Nationals-Cubs baseball game.

The Lady Devils, winners of the Group 1A VHSL championship earlier this month, were among several championship baseball and softball teams from Virginia and Maryland honored during the pregame ceremony as part of Champions Day. The girls received free tickets and Champions Day T-shirts, and will receive DVD copies of the pregame ceremony and a team picture on the field at Nationals Park. Family and friends got discounted tickets to the game, which the Cubs won, 5-4. ...
