National Honey Bee Day

National Honey Bee Day was celebrated by the Colonial Beekeepers Association and Brent & Becky’s Bulbs on Saturday with informational displays, vendor booths selling honey products and supplies, and the opening of a beehive in Brent & Becky’s Beehive Observation Hut. Above, Jim Hutchins of Mathews, and Kennah, Kyleigh and Ian Sutton of Seaford, gather at the observation hut to listen to master beekeeper Pete Ostrowski of Bena Bees discuss the importance of maintaining a healthy beehive. The Suttons plan on installing their own beehive next year. Below, Ostrowski removes panels from a hive in the observation hut to check for varroa mites and to make sure there are eggs and larvae, signs of a producing queen bee and a healthy hive.
