NANCY LEE SHERMAN

Nancy Lee (Winder) Sherman, 86, formerly of Glenmont, New York, died on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at the Riverside Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.

Nancy was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, to Capt. Augustus Winder of Cricket Hill, Mathews County, and Pearl (Helbig) Winder. She attended Greenfield schools and was a graduate of the Boston Children’s Hospital School of Nursing. She later worked as a registered nurse at the Albany (New York) County Health Department, and retired as the supervising nurse at its Cohoes pediatric clinic after many years of service.

“The Nance” had a special love for children, and took pride in caring for them as a nurse. After her retirement she helped care for her granddaughters, and formed a special bond with them through her ongoing loving presence in their lives.

She was an adult literacy volunteer, and worked in the classroom reading program at a local elementary school. Her faith was a constant source of strength and comfort throughout her life. She was a longtime member of the Glenmont Community Church (Reformed), and served on its consistory and as a food pantry volunteer.

She was an excellent cook who took pride in gathering her family for Sunday dinners. She was “the fun aunt” when she lived in Boston, and developed an enduring relationship with her niece and nephew that began during their summer visits. She was very close to her sister Lois and was a regular visitor to Gwynn’s Island, particularly after her mother and aunts relocated there in their later years. She enjoyed visiting Williamsburg and finding bargains at the Pottery, attending nursing school reunions and celebrating the Christmas season. She also loved singing and musical theater.

Nancy will be remembered as a strong, independent woman who was the loving foundation of her family.

She is survived by her loving children, Andrew (Audrey) Sherman of Guilderland, New York and Sally (Bobby) Wiggand of Glenmont, New York, and her granddaughters, Elizabeth Sherman and Amanda Sherman. She is also survived by her brother, Augustus (Mary Lou) Winder Jr. of Haddonfield, New Jersey; sister, Lois (Buster) Hudgins of Gwynn’s Island; her niece, Linda (Jim) Lawrence of Portsmouth; nephew, Will (Diane) Hudgins of Hanover; niece, Elaine Winder, and grand-nephew, Jonathan Hudgins.

Nancy was buried at the Green River Cemetery in Greenfield on Feb. 20.
