MVFD to hold boat docking fundraiser June 22

Mathews Volunteer Fire Department is trying a new fundraising activity this year that could turn into an annual event. The MVFD Boat Docking Contest and Buyboat Race will be held from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at Williams Wharf Landing in Mathews. Competition begins around noon, rain or shine.

Organizer Neal Hudgins said the event has been a big undertaking, that it has drawn a lot of interest, and he’s projecting that a large crowd will be attending. Anheuser-Busch will provide beer free of charge throughout the day and there will be four food vendors on-site—Howard-Dooley Cafe, Coastal Thirst, On the Flip Side, and Richardson’s Ice Cream Cart. Spiked Orange Crush drinks will be available for purchase, as well.

Entertainment will be provided by two Southern rock and country bands—Part Time and Edison & Co.—along with DJ Tommy Eriksen. Local favorite Hunter Owens will sing the National Anthem.
