The Marching Blue Devil band put on the first performance of its 2023 field show “Music of the Night” on Friday night at Ken Brown Field at Mathews High School. A large crowd filled the bleachers to watch the performance. Among those playing for the crowd were (shown here from top) percussionists Hayden Marshall and Hayden Owens, flautist Jael Williams, and drum major Haley Hoell. On Saturday, the MHS band took part in the Warhill Classic competition, receiving Second Place Drum Major in Class A. The MHS band has a couple more performances coming up in the near future: homecoming on Oct. 13 and Alumni Band Night on Nov. 3. This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the band will hold a car wash at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Gloucester. Proceeds support the marching band’s season as well as the Mathews Music Department Spring Trip.
