MRA rowers win three gold, silver at Philadelphia Youth Regatta

The Mobjack Rowing Association captured three gold medals and one silver at last weekend’s 17th annual Philadelphia Youth Regatta.

On Friday and Saturday, the MRA rowers took part in the regatta, which was held on the Schuylkill River. Normally a small, laid-back regatta, this year’s event was the largest in its 17-year history with almost 500 entries from 43 rowing clubs, said coach Tim Ulsaker.

Out of 97 races, Mobjack entered 21 events taking home four first-, second- and third-place heat finishes, which led to the three gold and one silver medal.

To simplify the swollen regatta, events were broken down into six-boat flights and the top three times of all flights for each event were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. Pulling in the top gold finish, Mobjack men Phillip Machen, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell, Russell Simpson and coxswain Kaitlyn Thompson won the men’s under 19-year-old four, eliminating 17 other entries with a time of 6:33.54.
