Twenty-five members of the Mobjack Rowing Association’s summer rowing program traveled to Philadelphia last Thursday to compete in the Independence Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
Mobjack rowers fared well in stiff competition, netting two silvers, and coming in fifth and sixth in two other finals, finishing 22nd out of 60 teams that qualified for the point standings.
First run in 1888 as the People’s Regatta, the event was renamed in 1958 and has evolved into a three-day event, attracting competitors from the U.S., South America, Canada and Europe, with this year’s regatta seeing 1,102 entries from 98 rowing clubs.
In men’s racing, Philip Machen, Matt Thomas, Kyle Moran, Tucker Blackwell and coxswain Matt Hendrix took second in a field of 17, three seconds behind Penn Athletic Club, in the men’s intermediate coxed four, and later Machen and Thomas placed second of 24 with Moran and Blackwell taking 13th in the men’s intermediate pair.
