MPPDC approves funding for septic system repairs

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission approved funding this summer for seven area homeowners to repair their failing septic systems.

The funds for the repairs were authorized from the commission’s Middle Peninsula Onsite Wastewater Assistance Program, according to MPPDC finance director Beth Johnson. Four of the applicants were from Gloucester and three were from Mathews.

A total of $38,440 in grants was provided from Water Quality Improvement Funds through the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and a total of $30,744 in loan funds has been approved.

The maximum grant amount to any homeowner is $15,000, Johnson said. Over the 20-year life of the program, MPPDC has provided funding to 115 Middle Peninsula residents of $1,085,000 to repair their failing septic systems, Johnson said. Most of that money has gone to homeowners in Gloucester and Mathews, she said.
