Motley, Smith win top district honors

Several Gloucester High School varsity softball players received district or region honors this season. 

In Peninsula District honors, Bridget Motley was named Player of the Year and Mackenzie Smith was chosen as Pitcher of the Year in a sweep of post-season accolades. GHS coach Red Lindsay and Menchville coach Tim Dragone were named Co-Coaches of the Year. 

As of last week and after 23 games, Motley was batting .583 with 42 hits, 40 RBIs and 43 runs scored. Motley, a senior, had six doubles on the season, five triples and two home runs.

Smith, with a record of 18-2 as of last week, had an ERA of 0.56 and an opponent’s batting average of .081. The junior had recorded 230 strikeouts in 123 innings, averaging 12.9 Ks per seven innings. Smith was also hitting .351 with 33 RBIs.

Joining Motley and Smith on the Peninsula District First Team were infielders Kirsten Greene at second base and Laura Tobin at third. Also making the First Team was designated hitter Emma West.
