Mother of 1-year-old charged in son’s death

The mother of a 1-year-old child in the North area of Mathews has been charged in the death of her son after the infant had allegedly been left alone in the bathtub and scalded by hot water on Thursday, Feb. 1, according to the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.

Miranda Dawn Gilbert, 24, was arrested on Saturday, two days after her child was pronounced dead at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

Gilbert was charged with one count of second-degree murder and three felony counts of child abuse and neglect. Two of the child abuse charges were filed in relation to her other two children, a 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.
