Money not available for complete Burleigh Road widening project, VDOT official says

Those residents looking for a minor widening and reconstruction of Burleigh Road, just south of Gloucester Court House, may have their hopes dashed. VDOT’s assistant residency administrator Joyce McGowan told the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors during its meeting in the colonial courthouse Dec. 4 that the estimated $5 million needed for the project is not available.

According to McGowan, only $1.9 million remains in the county’s secondary six-year program, which would be insufficient to complete the project as designed. Instead, VDOT has developed a reduced scope of work for Burleigh Road, which McGowan said would improve the safety of the winding, narrow road with the funding that is available.

VDOT now proposes to eliminate one of the more dangerous curves of the road, located near the Belroi Road entrance and replace about 1,000 feet of roadway with a more linear line of sight.
