Monahan wins state wrestling title

Gloucester High School senior Anthony Monahan became the VHSL Group 5A wrestling champion at 113 pounds during the 5A state wrestling tournament Friday in Fairfax.

Coming into the state tourney as the second seed at 113, Monahan defeated the number one seed from Broad Run, 1-0, to win the gold medal. He is only the fifth Gloucester wrestler to win a state championship. The last GHS grappler to earn a state title was Greg Todd in 2007.

Monahan went undefeated for the season and took the Conference 10, 5A South regional and 5A state championships.

Also representing GHS in the state event were, Monahan’s cousin, sophomore Hunter Owens at 145, along with senior Ethan Newell at 182 and freshman Cameron Walker at 195. Owens and Walker were both fourth-place finishers while Newell lost in the quarterfinals.

Monahan advanced to the state tournament as the Group 5A South region champion. Newell was second in the regional, Owens placed third and Walker was fourth. Devon Pullen was fift...
