MOC to hold boating safety courses

The Mathews Outdoor Club is partnering with U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 66, based at Milford Haven in Mathews, to provide boating safety courses beginning later this month.

Mike Moore of the Coast Guard Auxiliary reached out to Mathews Outdoor Club president Christine Johnson because he discovered online that the club wanted to offer boating safety courses for the community. Part of the Flotilla’s mission is to promote and improve recreational boating safety.

“I, and several others, will be teaching these courses,” said Moore.

The first class on the docket is the Boat Virginia Boating Safety course. A USCG Auxiliary-certified instructor will lead the sessions, which will be held at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad building on Cricket Hill Road. The course is free to the public but advanced signup is required due to facility size limitations. A minimum of five participants is needed to conduct the course with a classroom maximum of 15.
