Mobjack/MHS crew wins six races at home regatta

The Mobjack Rowing Association and Mathews High School crew hosted the first of three spring regattas at Williams Wharf on Saturday.

Hosting Albemarle, First Colonial, Granby, Grassfield, Great Bridge, Norfolk Collegiate School and Rock Ridge (from Ashland), the small Mathews squad fared well, pulling in six gold, three silver and two bronze finishes in the 21 events that were held.

The MHS men’s varsity, which consists of only four members, had senior Sean Carlson, freshmen Cole Wheeler and Henry Hospodar, and junior Josh Anthony racing the Men’s Senior Four with coxswain Savannah Hartlove for a silver finish behind Great Bridge. Later in the day Carlson stepped out and novice junior Matt Taylor was moved up to sit with the same boys and Hartlove in a Junior Four entry, resulting in a gold finish. The men’s varsity foursome also pulled a silver finish in the Men’s Quad. Carlson and Wheeler then took fourth out of seven boats in the Men’s Double.
