MINTREE ‘HEETEES’ FOLKES BROWN JR.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mintree “Heetees” Folkes Brown Jr., on Thursday, July 17, 2025, who was born in Glass, Virginia, on August 23, 1937, to Captain Mintree Folkes and Margie Estelle West. A dedicated waterman by trade, Min-tree followed in his father’s footsteps, with a life deeply rooted in the rhythms of the water. His passion for the river was evident in every aspect of his life, whether he was working, fishing, crabbing, netting, or duck hunting. In addition to his love for the water, Mintree was an enthusiastic softball player. He spent many years on the field, primarily as a pitcher for the Guinea Raiders, Playboys and showcased his talent in fast pitch with the Gloucester All Stars in his younger years. Mintree was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, his siblings: Alice M. Hicks, Joyce A. Jenkins, Russell Brown, Walton L. Brown and Mary L. Sigler. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Rachel C. Brown; his sons, Jackie L. Brown (Lora), Mintree Scott Brown (Epi); his granddaughter, Madison M. Brown (Macon), and his sisters-in-law, Barbara A. Brown, Barbara J. Brown, Halline Thompson and James, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. A devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather affectionately known as “Pop,” Mintree was a friend to all who knew him. His Christian faith guided his life, and he was known for his kindness and generosity. Throughout the years, he shared his life with many beloved dogs, who were always by his side. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who supported Mintree during his recent struggle, including the staff at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, Sanders Rehab staff, especially Hazel and Dee, and the compassionate team at Hospice. A graveside service was held July 23, 2025 at 11 a.m. in Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Michael Condrey, with a reception following in the Church Social Hall.

Mintree’s legacy of love, friendship and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
