Minister picks corn on July 1

Susan correspondent reports: Rev. J.A. Winn of East Mathews charge, is not only a good preacher, and worker in the “Master’s Vineyard” he is all of that, and seems also to be a very good truck gardener, on the first day of July he was seen gathering his first dish of roasting corn ears, which puts him ahead of the majority of his neighbors.
Spot and other fish are biting on Mobjack flats, spring chickens are ripe, garden vegetables are coming to the table and our city friends are coming to help clear them off.
The recent rains and lightning have cooled the atmosphere; the weather is now delightful for enjoyment, but too cool for vegetation. Picnics seem to be in the order of the day, on the glorious Fourth.
Some gentlemen visiting on East River were amusing themselves on the Fourth firing rifle shots across the land, much to the annoyance of some of our citizens, to whom the whistling bullets came too near for comfort. One man...
