MILLARD G. CALLIS

Millard G. Callis, 82, of Mathews, passed away unexpectedly on June 9, 2017 at his home.

He was born and raised on Gwynn’s Island. After graduating from Mathews High School, he enrolled in the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, graduating four years later as a machinist. He then was drafted into the Army serving in Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Frankfort, Germany. While in Germany with the 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron, 12th Cavalry, under Lt. Col. A.G. Frazer Jr., Armor Commander, Millard received several commendations for his fine record of service. After two years of service, Millard was honorably discharged and he went to work as a machinist at the Newport News Shipyard for many years. He then went to work at the Naval Weapons Station as lead machinist.  

Upon retirement, he enjoyed his daily walks where he met and talked to many friends. Millard also worked in his shop making furniture, clocks and wooden toys. He also collected and enjoyed movies, music tapes and electronic equipment.

Millard was a member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ruby Callis, and his beloved son, William Anthony (Tony) Callis.

Millard is survived by his son, Stephen Millard Callis; grandson, Blaine Callis; sister, Lavenia (Sis) Thomas; sister, Lou Anne Callis; brother and his wife, Ronald Wayne and Connie Callis, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Gwynn’s Island Cemetery. Visitation and luncheon will follow at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
