Middlesex shuts out Devil booters, 3-0

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team dropped a 3-0 contest last Wednesday on the road to the Middlesex Chargers. The two schools’ junior varsity teams also participated in a shutout game won by the Blue Devils, 4-0.

In the varsity matchup, the first Chargers’ goal came off a penalty kick two minutes into play. Middlesex scored again in the 24th minute of the first period, on a shot inside the 18’.

As the game neared halftime, the Chargers managed to put a third goal into the net, capitalizing on a corner kick that was mishandled by the Blue Devils.

Trailing 3-0 at the half, Mathews came out in the second half with new purpose. The squad’s defense stepped up and made things tough for their opponents. The Blue Devils maintained good possession, but struggled to find quality shots. The two teams played a very even game in the second half and neither could seem to find a way to penetrate the other’s defense.  JV Devils
