Middlesex accident results in fatality

Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle accident Friday in Middlesex County that resulted in a fatality.

The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Route 33 (General Puller Highway) west of Route 625 (Bobs Hold Road). A 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a camper was attempting to turn out of a private driveway onto Route 33 when it was broadsided by a 2006 Ford F-650 tow truck (pulling a vehicle).

The driver of the Silverado, 73-year-old Douglas Anthony Vito, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center. His passenger, 73-year-old Gladys Elise Vito, was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash and died at the scene. The Vitos are from Wicomico Church.

The driver of the Ford, Clarence Daniel Jones of Hartfield, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Walter Reed Hospital. His male passenger was not injured.

Vito failed to yield the right of way and will not be charged in the accident, the VSP stated.
